Agile, Traditional or Hybrid?

As a teacher, in all Project Management classes (without exception!) the following question is inevitable: “Which project management method is the best: Agile, Traditional or Hybrid?” And my answer is always: “It depends…” Yes, it depends on the nature of your project and what type of market it is in. All styles have advantages and disadvantages, but we have to deal with the following fact – no matter the client/sponsor, our projects are increasingly “tailormade”.

Therefore, I prepared a brief comparison between Project Management Methods to try to help you make the best decision:

1. Agile:

  • Planning: Lean, focused on short cycles with constant reassessment and refinement.
  • Management style: Flexible, adaptable, and collaborative, without the central figure of a project manager.
  • Advantages: Increased flexibility to deal with changes, frequent deliveries of value, improved team engagement.
  • Disadvantages: Difficulty in dealing with complex and long-term projects, need for an experienced and self-manageable team.

2. Traditional:

  • Planning: Detailed and comprehensive for the entire project lifecycle.
  • Management style: Formal, structured, and hierarchical, with a strong presence of the project manager.
  • Advantages: Increased predictability and control, ideal for projects with well-defined requirements.
  • Disadvantages: Lack of flexibility to deal with changes, less frequent deliveries, lower team engagement.

3. Hybrid:

  • Planning: Combines detailed initial planning with periodic reassessment and refinement.
  • Management style: Adaptable and formal, mixing agile and traditional characteristics.
  • Advantages: Balance between flexibility and control, frequent deliveries of value, increased ability to deal with changes.
  • Disadvantages: Complexity in implementation, need for a team with skills in both methodologies.

Alignment with the Current Market:

The current market increasingly demands tailormade projects, customized to meet the specific needs of each client. This demand requires flexibility and adaptability, characteristics that the hybrid management method offers.

Advantages of Hybrid Management for Tailormade Projects:

  • Increased flexibility to deal with changes: The hybrid method allows the project to be adapted to the client’s needs throughout the lifecycle, without compromising the quality of the delivery.
  • Frequent deliveries of value: The client can monitor the project’s progress and receive deliveries of value more frequently, which increases their satisfaction.
  • Better communication and collaboration: The hybrid methodology promotes communication and collaboration between everyone involved in the project, which ensures a more positive final result.
  • Increased team engagement: The team feels more engaged in a project that is flexible and adaptable, which increases productivity and work quality.

Conclusion:

Hybrid project management is the best option for the current market, as it offers the flexibility and adaptability needed to deal with tailormade projects. This methodology allows projects to be customized to meet the specific needs of each client, which ensures a more positive final outcome for everyone involved.

Remember: The choice of the ideal project management methodology depends on the specific characteristics of the project. However, hybrid management stands out as the best option for the current market, due to its flexibility, adaptability, and ability to meet the demands of tailormade projects.
